From Grief to Legacy: How the Pet Loss Support Group Helped Me Heal and Inspired My Work

Member Liz shares her pet loss story.

Losing a beloved pet is a deeply personal heartbreak. For me, the grief was overwhelming. My Miniature Pinscher, Brownie, had been part of my daily rhythm, my comfort, and my family for 14 years. In those first weeks, I struggled to find a way forward.

What helped me most was joining the Pet Loss Support Group, a community where I could share my story with others who truly understood the depth of my loss.

The Healing Power of Community

In the group, I found a safe space to talk about my grief without judgement. Listening to others who had walked the same path gave me perspective. Grief isn’t something to “get over,” but something to carry with love and dignity. Their compassion reminded me that healing is a process, and that I wasn’t alone.

I’m still recovering, but the group gave me the strength to transform my pain into purpose.

Turning my pet into a legacy

As an estate planning professional, I realised that my pet’s memory could live on through my work. I began to design legal tools that ensure pets are never forgotten or left vulnerable if their owners face illness, incapacity, or death. Brownie became my legacy, inspiring me to create resources that protect others’ companions.

Today, I provide:

  • Pet Trusts – ensuring funds are set aside for a pet’s lifelong care.

  • Wills with Pet Provisions – legally naming guardians and instructions for pets.

  • Power of Attorney for Pet Owners – authorising trusted individuals to make decisions if the owner cannot.

  • Advance Healthcare Decisions for Pets – guiding veterinary care in emergencies or end-of-life situations.

A mission beyond my own loss

What began as a personal journey of grief has become a professional mission: to help pet owners plan responsibly, so their animals are always safe, loved, and cared for.

The Pet Loss Support Group gave me the courage to turn sorrow into service, and now every client I help feels like a tribute to the bond I shared with Brownie.
